10/10: Danpyunsun and the Sailors
The Great Escape is a celebration of musical diversity and there was no better way to finish the weekend than with one of the most eclectic of the lot. The show was set in the conference room of a hotel, but as we entered to neon stage lighting draped across a drum kit complete with wind chimes and various other miscellaneous percussion, it didn’t take long to be transported elsewhere. Danpyunsun and the Sailors are from South Korea (not North Korea, as Danpyunsun insisted on reminding us!) and celebrate their native musical influences while mixing in western styles of rock and jazz to create a highly unique and exciting combination.
Danpyunsun’s charismatic stage performance, supported by superb funk-style bass, violins and varied percussion, made for a memorable show and one that symbolised the whole weekend perfectly, making the South Koreans the ideal closing act of the festival for me.
