This is one of those songs that doesn’t really fit into any genre, but continues to surprise and excite you as it progresses. What begins as sauntering alt-rock erupts into a power-metal chorus that’s carried along by a superb vocal display. The tidy guitar solo at the end pulls the track in yet another direction, making Germany’s Long Distance Calling not only a hard act to pin down, but one you simply need to hear more from.

‘Lines’ is taken from the band’s recent album TRIPS, which is an epic journey through post-rock, alt-rock, power metal and even a touch of prog as well. It’s one of the most surprising packages of the year so far for me and its refusal to belong to any particular genre gives the band’s sound a sense of freedom that’s refreshing and addictive.
